Remade In The Shelter

For my daughter, the colonial-style dance she's attending tonight is the highlight of her Christmas/New Year's break.  Discussions over her dress have been ongoing for months.  Anyone with a daughter understands what I mean!  She found a dress she loved, but it was strapless and, both for modesty reasons and to follow the dance's dress code, we had to modify the dress.

Thankfully, Pinterest came through!  I found this tutorial and it was just what I needed.  The idea to add sequins made the whole thing come together.  We found two layers of coordinating fabric, and another fabric with sequins that matched exactly to those already on the dress.  We had some fun time together stripping the sequins off that fabric.  Ha!  Then came the fun part - making, pinning and repinning the straps/sleeves.  And repinning a few more times.  Thankfully my daughter didn't mind trying on the dress over and over.

Here's a photo of the original dress:

Here's our remade version:

The straps are more sleeve-like than just simple straps.  They make the top much more secure.

The sequins add just the perfect touch.  If I had infinite patience, I'd sew on a thousand more.  But my daughter is pleased with these, and I'm tired of untangling nylon thread.  These will have to do.

It's a challenge to find modest dresses that are stylish, too.  I'm so glad we were able to make this one work!
